Brick drove slowly back to his house. Grabbing a few beers from the fridge, he went outside, sitting on the deck all afternoon watching the sun go down.

CHAPTER

23

Vietnam 1972

Brick was sitting on his Army cot, writing a letter to Karen, his girl back home, trying to ignore Paulo.

“Come on, man!” his friend pleaded. “Hawaiian women are the most beautiful in the world.”

“I’ve only got a week and the guys coming back from R&R say the women in Bangkok are beautiful.” He continued writing.

“Beautiful? They’re a bunch of whores! You want to see beautiful women? Come home with me.

“I noticed in the picture of you and your girlfriend, she has blond hair and blue eyes.” Brick stopped writing, raising his eyebrows at him.

“Ah, but you should see my Jenny do the hula.” Paulo started dancing around the barracks tent, swinging his hips like a dashboard hula dancer.

Brick burst out laughing. Paulo was a stocky boy of Hawaiian decent. Tough when he needed to be, but had a smile Brick had learned to trust. He was one of the few people who could make him laugh in this godforsaken place.

Paulo ducked as Brick threw his ballpoint pen at his head.

“I guess I’ll have to go just to get you off my ass.”
